About
Who runs this
Paraxis builds and maintains software, and runs this site. The consulting practice is at paraxis.dev, which carries the contact details and the people behind it.
The tools are free, carry no advertising, and are not funded by anything you do here.
How the tools work
Each page is a single static HTML file with its stylesheet and script inlined, and one font file. There is no framework, no analytics beyond aggregate page counts, and no request to any server once the page has loaded.
That is why the answer appears while you are still pasting. There is nothing to wait for.
How the counting rules were chosen
- Words
- Whitespace-separated tokens, matching what word processors report, so the number agrees with the one your editor or marker sees.
- Sentences
- Abbreviations, decimals and web addresses are removed before terminators are counted. Most counters skip this and report e.g. and 3.14 as sentence ends.
- Characters
- Counted as a reader sees them, so an emoji is one character. Tools that count storage units report two.
- Reading at 238 words a minute
- The average for silent reading of English prose reported across reading research, rather than the rounder 200 or 250 most tools use.
- Speaking at 130 words a minute
- Ordinary presentation delivery. The words-to-minutes tool exposes 100 and 160 as well, because pace moves the answer more than anything else.
