What each number means
- Lines
- Every line including empty ones. Empty text counts as zero rather than one.
- Non-empty
- Lines with at least one non-whitespace character.
- Blank
- Lines that are empty or whitespace only.
- Duplicates
- Repeat occurrences after the first, compared after trimming. Three identical lines count as two duplicates.
- Longest line
- Characters in the longest single line, which is what a fixed-width column or a terminal has to fit.
Typical uses
Checking a pasted spreadsheet column arrived complete, finding repeated entries in a list of addresses or identifiers, and confirming no line exceeds a fixed-width limit before an import.
To remove the duplicates rather than count them, use the text cleaner.
Questions
Do blank lines count as lines?
Yes in the main total, and they are also reported separately. Non-empty gives the count that matters for a list of items.
How are duplicate lines compared?
After trimming leading and trailing whitespace, and case sensitively. Two lines differing only in indentation count as duplicates.
